Blinding snow, at times accompanied by thunder and lightning, bombarded much of the nation’s midsection Thursday, causing whiteout conditions, making major roadways all but impassable. MoDOT crews were out in full force battling to clear the roadways. They fill the towed plow’s tank with liquid to give it weight but it’s clearly not as effective as the truck mounted plow. The left side is completely plowed but the towed plow’s side has a thin layer of snow left over. It would be a better idea to mount a salt hopper in addition to the tank on the tow plow’s side in order to get ride of the film that’s left over. Great idea.
TOW PLOWS Ready To Clear The SNOW – MoDOT plow trucks in ACTION
The Tow Plow trailer, about half the cost of a standard $93,000 plow trucks , has a 26-foot rubber blade with ceramic inserts that can be raised and lowered from controls inside the cab of the plow trucks . The Tow Plow trailer length is 34 feet, for a total length of truck and Tow Plow trailer of 62 feet, Brunner said.
The machine has an additional 7-ton salt tank, adding to the 11-ton tank on the standard plow truck, which allows a driver to stay out for a longer period of time before returning for a refill.
